CASPer test accommodations: If you qualify, apply.

Students living with disabilities and especially those living with “invisible disabilities” applying to competitive programs, can at times have doubts about asking for test accommodations.

Whatever your reasons may be for feeling apprehensive about applying for test accommodations, it is important to keep in mind that the resources offered have been set up in order to help you succeed. Succeeding on your CASPer test is often the difference between getting accepted or not to your dream program. If you feel as though you qualify for accommodation, you should therefore not hesitate to give yourself the best chance of success.

A few examples of accommodations available for the CASPer test include:

  • Extended time
  • Closed-captioned videos
  • Assistive software (i.e. speech to text)
  • Assistive staff (i.e. scribe and/or reader)

According to Altus assessments (creators of the CASPer test) the policy and procedure for accommodations are as follows:

"If you take the CASPer exam as part of the application process for your post-secondary or postgraduate program, you are entitled to apply for accommodation. All accommodation applications are handled by the CASPer team on a case-by-case basis and they therefore require that applications be submitted at least three weeks before the date of your exam. This gives them time to review the documents and make a decision on suitable accommodation for testing. If your application is submitted with less than three weeks left before your test date, they will likely not be able to process your accommodation, your best bet may be to register for another test date that is 3 weeks or more away."

Keep in mind that the documents you submit to Altus assessments remain strictly confidential, and are used to determine accommodations. Furthermore, they do not share your accommodation status with the academic program you are applying to or the individuals assessing your exam.
